Uganda Gorilla Trekking & Rwanda Discovery

Safari Overview

This 6-day cross-border itinerary combines gorilla trekking in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with Rwanda's diverse attractions including Akagera National Park, Kigali city, and Lake Kivu. Experience mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, then explore Rwanda's savannah wildlife, rich culture, and stunning lakeshores.

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport where your driver-guide will meet you and begin the scenic eight to nine hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda. The journey takes you through Uganda's beautiful countryside with rolling hills, terraced farmland, and rural villages where daily life unfolds along the roadsides. Stop at the Equator monument for photos and unique experiments demonstrating the Earth's hemispheres, then continue through Mbarara town for lunch.

The landscape becomes increasingly hilly as you approach Bwindi, with endless banana plantations, eucalyptus groves, and communities living on impossibly steep hillsides. Arrive at Bwindi in the late afternoon and check into your forest lodge perched on the edge of the ancient impenetrable forest. In the evening, attend a mandatory briefing about tomorrow's gorilla trekking adventure where rangers will explain the rules, what to expect, and answer any questions. Dinner and overnight at your lodge with the sounds of the forest providing a natural soundtrack.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Wake early for a hearty breakfast at six-thirty before transferring to the park headquarters by seven-thirty for your gorilla trekking briefing. Rangers will assign you to one of the habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and preferences, as some families require more strenuous hikes than others. The trek through Bwindi's steep, dense rainforest can last anywhere from two to eight hours depending on where the gorillas spent the previous night, navigating through thick vegetation, muddy trails, and challenging terrain at altitude.

Once your trackers locate the gorilla family, you'll spend one magical hour observing these magnificent creatures from just a few meters away, watching massive silverback males weighing up to 200kg demonstrate gentle authority over their families, mothers tenderly caring for playful infants, juveniles tumbling and wrestling like human children, and the entire family feeding, grooming, and interacting with behaviors remarkably similar to humans. The emotional connection is profound as you observe their expressions, gestures, and family dynamics, understanding why these critically endangered primates captivate conservationists worldwide.

After your hour with the gorillas, trek back to the starting point feeling deeply moved by this once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and lunch. The afternoon is yours to relax and reflect on your gorilla experience, or you can opt for a community walk to visit local Batwa pygmy villages and learn about the indigenous forest people's traditional lifestyle.

Day 3: Bwindi to Kigali, Rwanda - City Tour

After a leisurely breakfast, depart Bwindi for the journey to Kigali, Rwanda's capital city, crossing the border at Cyanika or Katuna border post. The drive takes approximately four to five hours through scenic landscapes as you leave Uganda's southwestern highlands and enter Rwanda, immediately noticing the difference in infrastructure with well-paved roads, organized traffic, and the famous cleanliness Rwanda is known for throughout Africa. Arrive in Kigali around midday, check into your hotel, and enjoy lunch.

Embark on a comprehensive Kigali city tour that reveals both Rwanda's tragic past and its remarkable present. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a deeply moving tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide where over 250,000 people are buried and where exhibits tell the story of Rwanda's darkest chapter and the nation's inspiring journey toward reconciliation, forgiveness, and unity. Continue to Kimironko Market, Kigali's largest and most vibrant local market where vendors sell everything from fresh produce and spices to traditional fabrics and handcrafted baskets. Explore the Inema Arts Center and Caplaki Craft Village for high-quality Rwandan handicrafts including traditional imigongo art made from cow dung. Drive through modern Kigali with its clean streets, orderly traffic, and impressive development that has earned it the nickname "Singapore of Africa."

  • Hotel des Mille Collines - $120/night
  • Lemigo Hotel - $100/night
Luxury:

Day 4: Kigali to Akagera National Park - Afternoon Game Drive

Depart Kigali after breakfast for the two and a half hour drive east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda's only savannah park and premier wildlife destination that has been remarkably restored over the past decade with the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, making it a Big Five park. Arrive at Akagera around midday, check into your lodge, and enjoy lunch with views over the park's lakes and plains.

In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive through Akagera's varied ecosystems that include open savannah plains, woodlands, wetlands, and a chain of lakes along the eastern boundary with Tanzania. The park teems with wildlife including large herds of elephants that frequently cross roads offering spectacular photo opportunities, their family groups including tiny calves staying close to protective mothers. Buffaloes gather in groups numbering hundreds, giraffes browse on acacia trees, while zebras graze alongside topis, impalas, and waterbucks in mixed herds. Warthogs trot comically with their tails held upright, and the park's numerous lakes attract massive concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles. If fortunate, you might spot lions resting in the shade or the extremely rare black rhinos near waterholes. The park harbors over 480 bird species including the rare shoebill stork in papyrus swamps, African fish eagles, and colorful lilac-breasted rollers. Time your return to the lodge to coincide with sunset over the savannah.

Accommodation Options:

Mid-Range:
  • Akagera Game Lodge - $140/night
  • Karenge Bush Camp - $180/night
Luxury:
  • Magashi Camp - $850/night
  • Ruzizi Tented Lodge - $450/night

Day 5: Full Day Akagera - Game Drives & Boat Safari

Begin your day with an early morning game drive departing at six o'clock when predators are most active and temperatures are cool, venturing into Akagera's northern sector and traversing different habitats while searching for the park's reintroduced lions and elusive leopards that occasionally reveal themselves resting in sausage trees or walking along game trails at dawn. Morning hours produce the best wildlife viewing as elephants emerge from woodland areas to drink at lakes, giraffes appear statuesque against the sunrise, and buffaloes graze actively before the heat of the day. Return to your lodge around nine o'clock for a hearty breakfast and brief rest.

In the afternoon, embark on the highlight of any Akagera visit—a spectacular two-hour boat safari on Lake Ihema, the park's largest lake that brings you incredibly close to wildlife from a completely different perspective. The boat cruise glides past enormous hippos that yawn to display massive tusks in territorial displays, sometimes mock-charging the boat for added excitement, and Nile crocodiles lining the shores. The lake's islands host breeding colonies of thousands of birds including cormorants, pelicans, ibises, and African fish eagles. Elephants come to the water's edge to drink and spray themselves, buffaloes wade into the shallows to escape heat and parasites, and waterbucks stand along the shores. After the boat safari, continue with an evening game drive through different areas of the park, exploring new sectors and timing your return to coincide with another spectacular African sunset.

Accommodation Options:

Mid-Range:
  • Akagera Game Lodge - $140/night
  • Karenge Bush Camp - $180/night
Luxury:
  • Magashi Camp - $850/night
  • Ruzizi Tented Lodge - $450/night

Day 6: Akagera to Lake Kivu & Departure

After breakfast and a final morning in Akagera with possible early game drive if time permits, depart the park and begin the journey west toward Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes and Rwanda's premier beach destination. The drive takes approximately five to six hours through Rwanda's scenic interior. Arrive at Lake Kivu's shores around midday and enjoy lunch at a lakeside restaurant.

Lake Kivu is a stunning freshwater lake sitting at 1,460 meters altitude with crystal-clear water, sandy beaches, and a dramatic backdrop of volcanic mountains. The lake is perfectly safe for swimming—a rarity in Africa—with no hippos, crocodiles, or bilharzia parasites, making it an ideal spot for relaxation after your safari adventures. Spend the afternoon enjoying the beach, swimming in the refreshing water, or taking a boat trip to explore some of Lake Kivu's islands including Napoleon Island. The lakeside town of Gisenyi has a distinctly relaxed atmosphere with palm trees lining the beach, colorful fishing boats pulled up on sand, and locals playing volleyball on the shore.

As your safari concludes, you can either enjoy sunset over the lake watching the sun descend behind volcanic peaks in the Congo, or begin the three-hour drive back to Kigali for your evening departure flight from Kigali International Airport.
